The shock of Bluetooth |
The wireless technology
which changes information trend, that is Bluetooth.
Personal computer, mobile phone, PDA and information devices have
evolved into convenient use as time passed. But the connection between
devices becomes more complicated as we use them properly. The data
transfer such as mail communication using notebook PC with mobile
phone on the outside, PC communication, connecting personal computers
and printers, etc requires cable. The efficiency of using devices
is limited by cable when we try to use freely. The connection itself
is complicated and the more devices, the more cables. The implementation
location and the way of use are limited by cable. Besides the connection
specs of each device are different, it requires more efforts to
understand technologies. To users, the efforts for using the information
devices are useless. Because the purpose of users is not learning
the way of use and connection, but is creating new value by using
information, even high efficiency information devices can not display
the ability properly in the system which gives burden to users.
Bluetooth is the specification for data communication between personal
information devices such as mobile phone, personal computer, etc.
using radio wave with out connection cable. As the distance between
devices is 10m below, it is excellent technology even though there
are some obstacles or device directions are different. By the appearance
of this new technology, our digital life can be changed remarkably.
Of course, plenty business chances are latent in it.
The
origin of Bluetooth
Bluetooth was originally derived from the name of Viking Harald
Bluetooth(910~985) who unified Denmark and Norway in the Scandinavia
in the 10th century. As Harald Bluetooth unified the Scandinavia,
it means to unify the connection between devices, furthermore the
specification of local area wireless communication. |

To
merchandise the Bluetooth embedded product, logo qualification
and type approval are required. Because Bluetooth aims to be standard
wireless technology regardless of the differences, maker, country
of product. So Bluetooth SIG prepared this system to confirm that
Bluetooth embedded product is satisfied with the required specification
and interoperability.
Logo qualification (Qualification Program):To confirm 'Satisfied
with the specification?¡¯,¡¯ Possible to mutual connection interoperability?¡¯
and indicate the logo on the product.
Type approval: Because Bluetooth is a wireless device, it should
be approved whether it is satisfied with radio regulation law
of each country.

Bluetooth
SIG (Special
Interest Group)is the consortium of the companies
leading development of Bluetooth in communication and computer industry.
In 1994, as mobile communication group of Ericsson in Sweden started
to research low power consumption and low price wireless interface
between mobile phone and peripheral equipment, Bluetooth Special
Interest Group has been established with aim at making worldwide
local area wireless communication standard by 5 companies of additionally
Intel, IBM in US, Nokia in Finland, Toshiba in Japan in 1998. The
member companies of the organization (adopter or non-founding SIG
member) have the license without royalty for development of the
product based on Bluetooth technology.
The 5 companies take partial roles according to their business area.
Roughly speaking, Ericsson and Nokia are in charge of wireless part
which is the base of communication, design of lower protocol layer
and providing Bluetooth chip, Intel has role for mediating as a
personal computer maker and providing Bluetooth module and IBM and
Toshiba take charge of designing upper layer protocol as application
part of communication.
Bluetooth SIG consists of promoter group which are leading companies
of standardization and adaptors of participant companies. Especially
in the end of 1999, as 4 companies of Microsoft, 3COM, Lucent Technology,
Motorola newly joined to promoter group, it formed the basis for
widening its activity. Hereby, these promoter groups, increased
to 9 companies, take leading roles of SIG such as extending Bluetooth
specification and organizing forums for providing test bed to testify
compatibility.
